Chapter 7 - Sent My Poems to k.d. lang

“So, who is going to be there again?” Julie asked Sarah as they approached the front door of Louise's building.

“I told you already and I don't know who else. Just relax. It will be okay.”

“We should be forwarded guest lists in advance. Carol and Marla. Did you say Carol and Marla? I can't remember.”

“No, I think they're in Hawaii.”

“Good. Not to be rude or anything, but they drive me crazy the way they are always all over each other.”

“You're just envious.”

“Of that? No, I'm not. You've seen them.”

“Yeah, I know. It's a little too much.”

“It's uncomfortable going out with them. Even at our own parties it's hard to take. I remember last winter when we went to the Canucks' Game. I will never go anywhere in public with them again. Never. We took the Sky Train and they were hanging off each other, necking and petting, cooing pookywooky baby talk. Everyone was staring at us, and there was me, the third wheel, wishing I had stayed home watching TV with Adrienne.”

Sarah started laughing.

“It's not funny.”

“Sorry, but I can just imagine it.”

“It's staged affection. No one's getting a look at tenderness unrehearsed. It's contrived.”

Sarah giggled some more.

“Shut up.”

Sarah started laughing so hard that she shook.

“It's a show! They're doing it to shock. It's not sexy at all. It's unbearable to watch.”

Sarah tried to take a breath. “I know,” she said. “But I can just imagine you sitting there.”

They took the stairs to Louise's floor and walked down to her door. Julie knocked lightly.

“Ring the bell, Julie.”

She knocked louder. No one came. Sarah reached around her and rang the bell.

“Maybe they didn't hear it, Julie. Try the door. Is it open?” Julie turned the knob and pushed the door open. She peeked into Louise's apartment.

Sarah nudged her from behind. “Go in, it's okay, go in.”

“Come on in, ladies. Thought I heard something,” said Louise as she appeared in the entrance. Louise was grace under pressure personified. She wore neat and comfortable simple, cotton Indian blouses, cashmere turtlenecks, or woolen vests. Her long, light-brown hair was dusted with a gray tint that she moaned about, but it reflected the light more beautifully than any artificial highlight. She was an immaculate hostess, her home always permeated by the soothing calmness of wicker and plants. She was encyclopedic about ingenious, inexpensive household hints. You obediently followed Louise as in her head she sewed and hung curtains for you, painted trim and borders, strung lights and rearranged furniture. Nothing in heaven or on earth could distract you when Louise suggested moving your coffee table or switching the bookcase and television stand. Couldn't sew? No problem, you just bought colored sheets and strung them up with hooks and clothespins. Chaos did not enter Lousie's domain.

“Wow, umbrella handles! What a great way to hang plants. I never would have thought of that,” said Sarah.

“Me neither. Magazine,” said Louise.

“It always looks so great in here.”

“Thanks.”

Julie's eyes were immediately pulled to Meagan even before her mind firmly registered that she was sitting there.
